The spawning cycle in temperate regions is different than in tropical regions. Male and female Carp spawn by swimming side by side. The micropyle on the Carp egg stays open when the egg becomes sticky. The larvae is nourished from the yolk sac.

In order to spawn, carp require a period of warm weather to raise the water temperature to at least 18°C for a prolonged period. The eggs are laid on soft weed or grasses and hatch in a few days. Growth of the young fry is rapid, the juvenile carp usually reaching a weight of 10-20g by the end of the first summer.

Local species of fish take a heavy toll of carp spawn. A cement tank in Hajee Hussai's fishery was manured and about 15 000 spawn were stocked in it. The majority of the spawn, however, were preyed upon by the large number of local fish which had earlier entered the tank and had not been removed.
