Regarding delivered but uncashed checks, unless the taxpayer contacts the IRS, they have no way of knowing the check was not cashed. All Treasury checks now expire one year from the date of issue; so if you discover an uncashed check more than a year old, you will have to apply for a replacement.

Don't most checks expire if not cashed w/in 90 days or so? I'm not sure... but if that were the case, you could just wait the time, and then close your account. ... Several vendor checks and payroll checks had not cleared, so I had to leave the old account open with sufficient balance until they did.
