Technically, there is no reason not to geld a young colt. Gelding well before puberty means your horse usually will not develop sexual behaviors and habits. It also may be less traumatic for the horse because there is less tissue to remove and a smaller incision.

its not too young. in my opinion it is best to geld a colt when he is still with his dam, it causes much less stress for him and the heeling process will be quicker. out of fly season tho.

Otherwise geld the colt. If you want to sell him you will have a bigger market with a gelding; if you want to ride him yourself you will be more successful with a gelding unless you have some ... His current age, at one year old, is a perfect time to do this since he is young. The earlier you geld a colt, the less he will exhibit stud-like behaviors in the future, and the easier it will be to re-train him if he has already learned some of these behaviors.
