Are people writing higher end frameworks utilising Prototype or is the general movement to just use Prototype and then add glue?

When I first started trying to use this library, a few years ago, I noticed that the documentation was definitely not one of its strongest points. As many other developers before me, I got my head around prototype.js by reading the source code and experimenting with it.
