The Mien are a sub-group of the Yao in China, and they originated from South-West China. According to 1995 population figures published by the Tribal Research Institute of Chiang Mai, there are over 40,000 Mien living in 173 villages in North Thailand.

Mien people originated in China, until they were forced to leave and separate. There were conflicts in China, and Mien people came as refugees to Southeast Asia. Miens settled in places like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

I first learned of the Iu Mien while I was trekking in the mountains of northern Thailand when I came upon Iu Mien villages in 1978. The Iu Mien or Yao originated from China. At one time they were probably a large independent kingdom, but seemed to have gotten dispersed ... Thank you for documenting Mien people in America.
