Avalanches occur in mountainous areas all over the world. They occur when a slab of snow is worked loose and slides down a mountain. Although, in many occurances, the weight of a person on the snow can cause a slab of snow to break away and start an avalanche, they also frequently start without any human intervention.

New snow build-up. More than 2 cm/hr may produce unstable conditions. More than 30cm continuous build-up is regarded as very hazardous. 90% OF ALL AVALANCHES OCCUR DURING SNOWSTORMS.

The broad range of avalanche sizes now makes sense: near the place where an infinite avalanche is about to occur, there will be lots of rather large avalanches! the vertical axis is the magnetization. On the right, you see the avalanches as they occur during the simulation.

Sno joke; Avalanches are rapid snow slides, and you'd have to survive one to know their true terror. We've not had the pleasure, but here's what we hear it feels like: Asphyxiation is the major cause of death in avalanches. Fewer than half of those who are totally buried survive, and nobody who's been buried deeper...
