Adult fruit flies lay eggs on fruit, which hatch into larva. After a few days the larva change into pupa, and then become adults.

Fruit flies come from rotten fruit. But when they are in your house, they are also caused by excess moisture. For instance, the shower. Make sure to use an exhaust fan in the bathroom, and get some fly paper to get rid of the little buggers...

But I think fruit flies still make a fair case for spontaneous generation. The first time I had an opportunity to ask a fruit-fly expert where the fruit flies in my kitchen came from, he got very defensive and insisted that, despite what his neighbors claimed, they didn't come from his genetics laboratory.

If you have been seeing small flies or gnats in your kitchen, they're probably fruit flies. Fruit flies can be a problem year round, but are especially common during late summer/fall because they are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables.

I have a question for you, that being, where do fruit flies come from??? I just can not figure this out. I bring home fruit and just because I don't eat them up as early as I should I get flies?? Do they magically appear, or do they manifest directly from the fruit itself???
