The other alternative to a mineral base is a chemical base, i.e. molecules made in a lab - thus the term synthetic oil. The oil's real, but the molecules didn't come directly out of the ground as oil. They were "assembled" from chemical elements by the amazing Dr. Mobil (or RedLine or whoever you like).
