I purchased a Whirlpool 40 gal elect. water heater on 11/10/2007. It sprang a leak and I replaced it on 10/07/2008. The replacement sprang a leak and I replaced it on 07/07/2009. It sprang a leak and I replaced it on 11/29/2009. I am not very happy with whirlpool water heaters to say the least.

Do not purchase a Whirlpool hot water heater, electric model made by American Manufacuring with a "Smart Center" circuit board. They manufacture for several companies who place their "brand" on the unit. Mine is a 50 gal.

Re: Whirlpool water heaters ... I hate my whirlpool water heater too...it is a 50 gallon model with a left hand threading thermocouple. I am sick and tired of fixing this waterheater. I purchased it at Lowe's building supply. This waterheater is exclusively sold there.
