Like Whitbread, S&N now have an exemption from the European Commission until 2002 but may be forced to dispose of tied pubs then. [EC Notice re S&N] This is why they are thinking of giving up their tenanted pubs within three years whilst still operating other companies' tenancies free of tie under management contracts.
