Sirius-B gives an example of the size of a white dwarf. Electron degeneracy halts the collapse of this star at the white dwarf stage. Though comparable in mass to the Sun, its white dwarf stage is smaller than the Earth.

Once a white dwarfs contracts to its final size, it no longer has any nuclear fuel available to burn. However, a white dwarf is still very hot from its past as the core of a star. So, as time passes, the white dwarf cools by radiating its energy outward.

Typically, a white dwarf has a radius equal to about 0.01 times that of the Sun, but it has a mass roughly equal to the Sun's. ... A typical white dwarf is slightly bigger than the Earth.

What is a white dwarf star ? ... A white dwarf is the final stage of the evolution of a star that is between .07 and 1.4 solar masses.  White dwarfs are supported by electron degeneracy and they are found to the lower left of the main sequence of the HR (Hertsprung Russel) diagram.

White Dwarf Stars ... A white dwarf is what stars like our Sun become after they have exhausted their nuclear fuel. Near the end of its nuclear burning stage, such a star expels most of its outer material, creating a planetary nebula.

The nearest globular cluster to Earth (7,000 light-years away), and containing more than 100,000 stars, M4 was the target of a Hubble Space Telescope search for white dwarf stars. Ancient red giant stars are predominant in this view from a ground-based telescope.

Final stage is White Dwarf. After red giant stage, with no more nuclear energy, the star collapses into a white dwarf. Size of white dwarf is inversely related to the mass.

A white dwarf is composed primarily of carbon and oxygen, held up by electron degeneracy pressure. A typical white dwarf is about the size of Earth. Also, the more massive a white dwarf is, the smaller it is!

A typical white dwarf is about the size of the Earth. It is also very dense and hot. A spoonful of white dwarf material on Earth would weigh as much as a car. Strange, isn't it? ... ; A white dwarf surrounded by a cocoon of gas; Click on image for full size (20K JPG); NASA, STScI...
