Unfortuantely we never got around to whitewashing our house, but, I did an enormous amount research on the subject and discovered that you do NOT want to paint brick. Why? Because the paint doesn't allow the natural breathing to occur with brick.

I have an old rowhouse in Philadelphia with a long exposed brick wall. The bricks are dark red/brown, which makes the wall feel ... Watered-down white latex paint, applied with a rag, is how I typically see the effect handled. Avoid "true" whitewashing, which is a liming prcedure that "sheds" (like chalk dust) over time.

I received a few questions regarding painting brick. Painting brick can change the look of a room with very little money. Once you take the plunge and paint it a solid color you are committed to that look. It is not easy to remove the paint from the bricks surface.

When you are thinking about painting a brick exterior, consider the benefits of whitewashing instead. Not only can you whitewash a brick surface, but it is much better than painting. Modern outdoor paints stick to brick really well for a while, but wear quickly and unattractively.
