The Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria were outfitted in the minor port of Palos. Columbus was aided in recruiting a crew by two brothers--Martin Alonzo Pinzon, who received command of the Pinta, and his younger brother Vicente Yanez Pinzon, who commanded the Nina.

Pinzon was born in the southern Spanish seaport town of Palos, to a family of Spanish shipowners. His brother, Vicente Yáñez Pinzon, commanded the Nina; his other brother, Francisco Pinzon, was the pilot (first mate) of the Pinta.

Commanded by Admiral Brooke and Erik ... The Pinta was captained by Martín Alonso Pinzón (brother of Vincente who captained the Nina). We actually don’t know much about Pinta. She was much like the Nina, but probably slightly larger at about 70 tons.

Thus Columbus obtained the Nina and Pinta. The third ship, originally named the Gallega, was leased from its owner, Juan de la Cosa, who signed on with Columbus as pilot. Columbus renamed this ship the Santa Maria.
