Saccharine was invented in 1879 when a chemist named Constantin Fahlberg spilled something on his hands at a lab at Johns Hopkins University. Apparently, Fahlberg was not just clumsy, but unhygienic. He didn't wash his hands, and at dinner that evening he happened to lick his fingers and taste something sweet.

BARF and the Guilty Conscienc ... My BARF adventure was not a very good experience, I must say. Positive for me and the Mals in its outcome but a difficult, ... So they invented Saccharine and Aspartame (known bad chemicals, even carcinogenic!). Now, today, after further study, sugar, in moderation, is a health food!

Anyway, sugar was a scarce item, so they invented saccharine and lots of people used it, but didn’t really like it. If you said someone was saccharine, it wasn’t a compliment; it meant phony, not sweet. Coffee was not a big problem for our family, but something we took advantage of it in the Mexican market.

The saccharine "Summer Holiday" is one of those #1s, and it was one of six #1 singles Richard produced in the 1960s. I love this song for so many reasons, but one of the main ones is it's one of the many songs I've envisioned using as a music supervisor one day.
