Clavichord; The clavichord is a member of the family of musical instruments known as keyboard chordophones. It is one of the oldest forms of stringed keyboard instrument.

Now, the clavichord seems to have been invented around 1400, and for the first 300 years or so of its existence it was always fretted. We now think that the first completely unfretted instruments were made in the late seventeenth century;

The first keyboard instrument that used strings, the clavichord, came to be in the late Middle Ages, although nobody knows exactly when it was invented. The clavichord had an action similar to that of the piano, but the tone it produced was much softer and too quiet to play in a concert.
