In May 1883, the first ferry was built and installed at Saskatchewan Landing. Built by Sandy MacDonald in Battleford, it was nine feet wide, eighteen feet long, and large enough to carry two Red River carts. This was hauled by horses from Battleford to the Landing, taking ten days to reach the river.
