In 1753, a large body of French from Canada moved to the southwest, and erected Forts Presque Isle, Le Boeuf, and Venango. In April of that year, M. Jon- (page 34) caire was sent, with a small detachment of regulars and a number of friendly Senecas, to visit the Indians on the Ohio and its branches.
