In modern times, Pope Paul VI visited Uganda in 1969. St. Victor I, who reigned from 189-199 AD, was himself an African.

The first pope in "modern times" to visit Africa was Pope Paul VI. He went to Uganda in 1969. Pope Paul was the first pope to be a world traveller [he went to Asia too] -- and the first one to leave Italy in 150 years.

Pope John Paul II has been to this part of the world before. The ANC's late President Oliver Tambo met with the Pope at the Vatican in the late 1980's, prior to the first visit by the Pope to Southern Africa.

A friend has provided me a copy of the August 7, 1998 issue of The Sword of the Lord, which contains an article, "Was Peter the First Pope?" ... Pope Stephen (254-257) removed certain bishops in Africa for heresy. Later he overruled a synod of African bishops which wanted to rebaptize lapsed Catholics returning to the faith.
