On July 14, 1789, a hostile mob attacked the Bastille. The prison warden tried to chase them off by firing into the crowd - killing 98. All this did was make the crowd blood-thirsty. They forced their way into the prison, killed and beheaded the warden, and savagely beat many of the other guards.
