Let's start with the longest note symbol, the whole-note or semibreve. It appears as a single hollow notehead. You might reasonably wonder why, if this is a whole-note, it is also called SEMI-breve. In fact, there is a symbol called breve, which is twice as long, but we can safely ignore it.
