Between about 30° to 35° north and 30° to 35° south of the equator lies the region known as the horse latitudes or the subtropical high. This region of subsiding dry air and high pressure results in weak winds.

This is where Horse Latitudes first appeared. The poem was inspired by an illustration on a paperback book depicting horses being thrown overboard from a Spanish galleon. "It's called Horse Latitudes because it's about the Doldrums." Jim explained in 1967, "where sailing ships from Spain would get stuck.

Horse Latitudes lyrics performed by The Doors ... There's a really good collection of poetry by Northern Irish poet Paul Muldoon called Horse Latitudes which is a good place to go after you've absorbed Jim's song. Muldoon was born in County Armagh but now lives in the US teaching at Princeton.

5 comments to Horse Latitudes ... Why isn’t that area of the world called the “pig latitudes,” or the “cattle latitudes?” It seems highly unlikely to me that any edible substances on board during a months-long sea journey would be wasted.
