You have actually already built it in an earlier part of this lesson. Let's build it again, and discover several different ways to make it. Tetra means four, and the tetrahedron has four sides which are all triangles, so the tetrahedron is very strong.

It's shape makes it strong because when the force is applied on it the force is split into different directions.

The moments at each vertex are negated by opposing moments from the other members. Assume that you push on Corner A of a triangle ABC and the force you are applying is perpendicular to side AB (this is only to keep the math simple). A mom...

One of the reasons triangles are important is because they are strong shapes. A triangle can't be pushed out of shape in the same way other polygons can. (Remember, a polygon just means a shape with straight sides.)

Triangles are structurally strong and often used in the construction of bridges and buildings. ... Traingles can be classified by their angles. An Acute Triangle has all angles less than 90 degrees. An Obtuse Triangle has one angle greater than 90 degrees. A Right Triangle has one 90 degree ... Learn more about triangles...

The line-of-sight notion in these triangles is so strong, that I have never thought myself about the plane, although we always point out how closely related the concept is to DTMs" (Email from a survey science academic, May 30 1997)

WHAT YOU NEED ... 7 sticks ; 7 nuts and bolts ... When people build bridges and other structures that need to be strong, which shape should they use?

Triangles are so strong because they are made up of the least number of straight lines, and - in cage use - usually corners of no more than 90 degrees (optimally less). If you have a triangle with all angles under 90 degrees, it will be super strong.

The reason triangles are so strong and useful is that they are so easily defined and constrained. If we know any three things about a triangle then we know pretty much everything about it. If we know one angle and two sides or two angles and one side or three angles or three sides then we have the bastard nailed.
