Anemia - ice chewing Blood Conditions ... Why chewing ice? What explaination does the doctor give for why the body needs ice when you are anemic....it's just frozen water. I don't understand why or what makes you want to chew ice? If there isn't ice in the house, do you go out and buy ice?

Of course, not all people who chew ice have low iron, but we have found young teenage girls with low iron may be prone to learning disorders and other kinds of problems, so it is quite important to check it out, especially if she is typical of preteens and teens in her diet.

Okay, so I don't know what it is wrong with me, but I can't stand when people chew ice. It gives me the chills. For real. Worse than nails on a chalkboard. However, today, just now, I bit an ice cube in half. Mike now owes me $10 (or he's paying my bar tab).

I told him that I crave and chew ice quite often. The doctor explained that this was a pica and I should stop chewing the ice because it was affecting my body's ability to absorb iron. What I did not tell the doctor is that I crave and chew plain ... Where can I find a dietitian who works with people who have anemia?

My roommate has low iron and she never eats ice. Typically her problem is that she's too cold...so why would someone who normally feels colder than most people eat ice? I used to eat ice when I was a kid, now I don't, unless it's the little round stuff, that comes out ... I've eaten ice since I could chew so you do the math.
