I have never figured out who these people are. Toward the end of the show, when the grander looks exit, nearly half the audience might get up from their seats and clap. The American press remains firmly in their chairs, scribbling notes, unfazed.

That's a good question you ask. I didn't find anything conclusive either, but would recommend you look up the works of zoologist Desmond Morris. Among other books, he wrote one about human gestures, ... My guess would be that this behavior is partially instinctive. ... I do not think that hand-clapping as applause is universal,
