When people think of thirst, we often think of it in a very mechanistic fashion. I.e., when our body needs fluids, something sends this message to our brain and we become thirsty, thus causing us to want to drink something.

Why do people with diabetes get so thirsty? Do they risk becoming easily dehydrated? ... The kidneys normally reabsorb nearly all filtered glucose, but, when the blood sugar level exceeds about 180 mg/dl [10 mmol/L], they t can no longer do so and must use 'free water' to get the extra glucose into the urine.
