Question: When solving a problem on slopes, and in the formula y=mx+b what do the M and B stand for? Why M and B? ... In the standard equation for a line, y = mx + b, m designates the slope of the line, and b the y-intercept, that is b is the second coordinate of the point where the line crosses the y-axis. c is your y intercept; so make c =10 and you want the zeroes to ... All of the letters stand for numbers you can plug in, just as the others have said. a, b and c are usually constants when you solve for x. In order to plan a parabola, you will need to consider something like ax^2 = y, where y is the height of the arch.
