It is also present in fetal red blood cells, but does not interact with fetal hemoglobin, leaving its affinity for oxygen unchanged. Adult hemoglobin alone actually has a higher affinity for oxygen than its fetal equivalent, but the levels of 2,3-BPG reduce it.

The average level of adult hemoglobin was higher among infants whose mothers were young, ... We focused on adult rather than fetal hemoglobin level because of the recording practices followed during this period. The levels of adult hemoglobin and nonacetylated fetal hemoglobin were stored in computerized files;

These hemoglobin proteins have a higher binding affinity for oxygen than the adult hemoglobins encoded by the b and d genes. This increased binding allows the fetus to successfully extract oxygen from the blood without competing with the mother.

The fetus has adaptive mechanisms that support function and growth in a low-oxygen environment; fetal blood has more hemoglobin than adult blood, and fetal hemoglobin has a higher affinity for oxygen than maternal hemoglobin at the same partial pressures of oxygen.

While each of these genes serve the same basic function of oxygen transport, they have already diverged slightly in function: fetal hemoglobin (hemoglobin F) has a higher affinity to oxygen than adult hemoglobin.

Fetal hemoglobin has a slightly higher affinity for oxygen than does adult hemoglobin. This allows the fetus to extract oxygen more efficiently from the maternal circulation. In adults the major hemoglobin is identified as HbA (more commonly HbA1) and is a tetramer of 2 α and 2 β chains as indicated earlier.

Adult hemoglobin alone actually has a higher affinity for oxygen than its fetal equivalent, but the levels of 2,3-BPG reduce it. For mothers to deliver oxygen to a fetus, it is necessary for the fetal hemoglobin to extract oxygen from the maternal oxygenated hemoglobin across the placenta.
