In my experience the only thing that I have seen turn metal black under normal conditions is the acid content of some peoples' skin. This seems to vary greatly ... I have seen people rub 14K gold on there skin and it will leave a black line. You may say that is because the ring was dirty, but it does not happen on my skin.
