As water freezes, what happens to the water molecules that causes ice to float?why is the unquie? My answer is that the ice has comes more dense n is light to float up then to sink down. I am no physicist, but I think ice is less dense than...

Why did the ice sink in the second glass? (alcohol is not as dense as water-alcohol molecules are farther apart and can't hold up the ice- so ice sinks to the bottom) If water's density is 1.0 and ice is .92, what would you guess is alcohol's density?

Ice cubes float higher in salt water... it is more dense... than fresh water. Ice cubes sink in alcohol. Can you figure out why? You might want to read up on density and specific gravity.

Water has a thermal conductivity several times bigger than alcohols and other organic liquids, so this factor would make it melt faster in water. 3) Since alcohols are 20% or so less dense than water, an ice cube will actually sink to the bottom of alcohol rather than floating like on water.

Why does an ice cube sink in alcohol, but not in water? This becomes our new question to investigate. Point out to students that science does not often arrive at final answers. Usually, as we gain knowledge, we find new questions to answer.
