How can I explain to my third grader that a number divided by zero is undefined? The school calculator gives the answer 0/E, and the Windows calculator gives positive infinity. ... But worse, the calculator on the Windows Accessory program gives the answer "positive infinity" when you divide a number by 0.

TO SAY that "any number divided by zero is infinity" is not quite correct. Considering normal arithmetic, it is not possible to divide by zero. ... On the other hand, 0/0 is undefined, not indeterminate. This might sound pedantic but leads to some important consequences.

Division by zero is a problem of mathematics that does not allow a number to be divided by zero. Observe: ... Numbers of the form A/0, on the other hand, where A is not 0, are said to be "undefined." This is because any attempt to define them will result in a value of infinity, which is itself undefined.

About three hundred years after Mahavir, another Hindu mathematician, Bhaskara, states, "a definite number divided by cipher (zero) is a submultiple of nought" and goes on to write, "These fractions of which the denominator is cipher are termed infinite quantities." Not exactly the undefined definition we use today,

The fact that almost anything divided by zero is undefined came to the west much later. The zero came first, then the paradox. By the way, do you know which number divided by zero is not undefined, and why? Find out by clicking here.

Let me summarize what I think I have proven. Any number divided by zero is ±∞ and undefined. However in practicality, any number divided by zero is just undefined.; I apologize if I just gave you a migraine.

Axiom #4: Conversely, the slope of a vertical line is X divided by 0 (where X is non-zero) which is equal to undefined. If you need proof of this, then read this proof. Axiom #5: ... ; Since anything divided by zero is undefined: ... ; This is just what we would expect, because any number divided by zero is undefined.

It's just another way of saying "Not a Number", "Undefined", "Indeterminate", and of course, "Error". One cannot divide or be divided by zero. After all: 0/0=X; 0=X*0; therefore, X=All Real Numbers, causing it to be undefined.
