because the earth is always tilted at a certain angle (so that the closest point to the sun is always between the two tropics, near the equator).. so that really is the big difference, the fact that the equator (give or take 20 degrees) is always closer than either of the poles...

This was partly due to El Nino, an ocean current that starts in the Pacific Ocean near the equator and is unusually warm. This current is so large that it affects the weather in many parts of the world. El Nino happens once in a while, not every year.
