The sacred rock over which the Dome of the Rock is built was considered holy before the arrival of Islam. Jews believed, and still believe, the rock to be the very place where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac (an event which Muslims place in Mecca).

The Dome of Rock was built in 640 AD. It is the oldest Islamic structure. Al though it has been somewhat changed over the years, the Dome of Rock is still mostly in its original form. It was built to honor the Prophet Muhammad.
