To Kill a Mockingbird is often banned due to the use of the word "n*gger". If one reads the story, however, the word is never used by a main character, and the main characters are against racism.

It was a man standing up against racism and the trouble he ran into. That is what some southern states banned it for. Some southern states were against it because racism was depicted in its true venomous form. It exposed them.
