This is the most possible reason to get a media disconnected message from a wireless adapter. Are you shure that media disconnected message comes from your wireless adapter? It seems to me that it could related to your ethernet adapter.

I used to have them wirelessly networked together and to a wireless media controller using a different fixed IP set - 192.168.1.etc. For some reason suddenly both computers' wireless adapters show "media disconnected" in ipconfig.

In ip config, cmd, it says that the media state is disconnected. I've tried typing in ipconfig /renew, and that doesn't seem to ... It says that the broadcom 802.11g/b WLAN is disconnected. And I'm currently connected to the internet via netgear router. It's just when I try to connect using wireless that nothing happens.

Tom's Hardware: Topic Buying a wireless express card for Windows Vista laptop ... A wireless router is not Vista or XP compatible, it's TCP/IP and 802.11b/g compatible. Doesn't your laptop have a built-in wireless network adapter? The 2wire's have WEP enabled by default. Try disabling and connecting.
