The only birds of similar plumage and size are the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, which is extremely rare and was thought extinct until documented sightings and sound recordings in 2004 and 2005, and the Imperial Woodpecker, a bird native to Mexico which is presumed extinct.

They don't occur is north and south polar regions beyond the tree line, nor are they found in New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia and most of Oceana. Thanks for your guesses. WhatBird.com led me to a Red-headed woodpecker, but it definitly isn't that. Looked through 4 bird books, too, but nothing looked close. Guess it'll remain the Mystery bird.
