The Mercator map has always been a poor projection for a world map yet due to its rectangular grid and shape, geographically illiterate publishers found it useful for wall maps, atlas maps, and maps in books and newspapers published by non-geographers.

Very rare Ottoman printed map of the world with text in Arabic but written in Ottoman Turkish script. The map features the three exploratory voyages of the Pacific by British explorer Captain James Cook in the years 1768-1771, 1772-1775, and 1776-1779 (this is outlined in the bottom left corner of the map).

One of the most recent maps acquired by the National Library is a very rare Ottoman printed map of the world by Mahmud Ra’if Effendi. Published in 1803 in Istanbul, this world map in a Mercator projection is centered on the Australian continent.
