In the slope-intercept form of a straight line, I have y, m, x, and b. So the only thing I don't have so far is a value for is b (which gives me the y-intercept). ... Well, if I have two points on a straight line, I can always find the slope; that's what the slope formula is for.

The formula for slope is sometimes referred to as "rise over run", because the fraction consists of the "rise" (the change in y, going up or down) divided by the "run" (the change in x, going from left to the right).

We found that the slope m for this line is 2. By looking at the graph, we can see that it intersects the y-axis at the point (0, –1), so –1 is the value of b, the y-intercept. Substituting these values into the equation formula, we get:

point slope formula, y intercept, y1: Hi Greg, You need to use the point-slope formula: y-y1=m(x-x1) Where (x1,y1) is a point on the line, and m is the slope. Using what you gave me: y-5=(-4)(x-2) Distribute the -4: y-5=-4x+8 Now add to both sides: y=-4x+13 Does this... ... More Algebra Answers;

Question: When solving a problem on slopes,and in the formula y=mx+b what do the M and B stand for? Why M and B? ... In the standard equation for a line, y = mx + b, m designates the slope of the line, and b the y-intercept, that is b is the second coordinate of the point where the line crosses the y-axis. Why m and b is...
