Tensile strength - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tensile strength ( \sigma_{UTS} or S_U ) is indicated by the maxima of a stress-strain curve and, in general, indicates when necking will occur. As it is an intensive property, its value does no...

YP is the yield stress extrapolated to a shear rate of zero. (Plastic viscosity, PV, is the other parameter of the Bingham-plastic model.) A Bingham plastic fluid plots as a straight line on a shear rate (x-axis) versus shear stress (y-axis) plot, in which YP is the zero-shear-rate intercept.

The yield point is that point when a material subjected to a load, tensile or compressive gives and will no longer return to its original length or shape when the load is removed. Some materials break before reaching a yield point, for example, some glass-filled nylons or die cast aluminum.

I was wondering on how you can esitmate the yield point of a material based on its chemical composition? Is there any good books out there on this? If I gave the chemical requirements that are following, would I be able to guarantee a certain min yield and what would it be?

NUMEROUS investigations of the factors controlling the lower yield point have shown that the lower yield point ( LYP) varies with grain size (d) according to the equation:

Materials testing definition for Yield Point Elongation ... In materials that exhibit a yield point, the Yield Point Elongation (YPE) is the difference between the elongation of the specimen at the start and at the finish of discontinuous yielding (the area in which an increase in strain occurs without an increase in stress).
