Our B-29's could fly 300 mph, but on the west leg of the flight I recorded a ground speed of only 60 mph. We were flying into a 240 mph headwind. Thus our flight time to cover the course was extremely long and we consumed too much fuel and we would have run out of gas before reaching Saipan.
