Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons (this means that there are NO double bonds in the molecule). They contain Hydrogen and Carbon atoms only. There are an immense number of possibilities. The simplest being methane with just ONE atom of Carbon.

Hydrocarbons which contain only single bonds are called alkanes. They are called saturated hydrocarbons because there is a hydrogen in every possible location. This gives them a general formula CnH2n+2.

Open-chain alkanes (without rings) all have the general formula CnH2n + 2, where n equals the number of carbon atoms. The following table shows the structures and names for the first 10 unbranched, open-chain alkanes.

Alkanes - a class of hydrocarbons that contain nothing but single bonds. The general formula for noncyclic alkanes is CnH2n+2. Alkane names end with the suffix -ane. The prefix depends on the number of carbons in the chain (click here for the prefix table).
