PIGAFETTA, Francesco Antonio (pe-gah-fet'-tah), Italian navigator, born in Vicenza in 1491; died there in 1535. After receiving a good education, he was about to enter diplomacy, when he read of the expeditions to the New World that had been made by the Spanish and Portuguese, and determined to become their historian.
