André Breton was born in Tinchebray (Orne), the son of a shopkeeper. He spent his childhood on the Brittany coast and started early on to write poems – he knew the poet Paul Valéry while still young. Breton studied medicine and later psychiatry, and in 1921 met Freud in Vienna.

Breton is a Celtic language spoken mainly in Brittany (Breizh) by about 365,000 people, about 240,000 of whom speak it fluently. Breton is closely related to Cornish and less closely related to Welsh, though these languages are not mutually intelligible.

Breton (Ar Brezhoneg) is a Celtic language like Welsh, Gaelic, etc. In particular, it belongs to the same branch as Welsh, the Brythonic branch. Breton is spoken essentially in West-Brittany.
