Cartier was born at St.-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in Lower Canada on September 6, 1814. He came from a wealthy family who claimed to be very distant relatives of the famous French explorer Jacques Cartier. He became a lawyer in 1835 and also got involved in the railway business.

A French Canadian statesman, son of Jacques Cartier and Marguerite Paradis, b. at St. Antoine, on the Richelieu, 16 Sept., 1814; d. in London 20 May, 1873. He studied at MontrealCollege (Sulpicians). During the Canadian rebellion (1837-38) he fought at the battle of St. Denis.

He was edu-eated at St. Sulpice College, Montreal, and admitted to the bar in 1835. He took part in the Lower Canada rebellion of 1837, and was under arms at the battle of St. Denis.
