It seems as though Desdemona was breaking away from the strictness imposed by Brabantio. She denied her father any right in choosing or granting allowance to Othello to marry her. Instead she chose the man who she wanted to marry and felt it unnecessary that her father intervene in their relationship.

When the play opens Othello and Desdemona have just eloped a few hours earlier. But we learn first of Iago’s bitter resentment of Othello’s selection of Cassio as his lieutenant and we fail to see that the marriage is prior to the first stirrings of Iago’s intrigue.

When Iago tells Othello that Brabantio will try to annul Desdemona's marriage, Othello says, "But that I love the gentle Desdemona, / I would not my unhoused free condition / Put into circumscription and confine / For the sea's worth" (1.2.25-28). "Gentle" means kind, refined, and of a good family.

After it's decided that Desdemona will go to Cyprus, too, but that Othello must leave immediately, he instructs Iago to stay behind for a day in order to carry papers from the Senate and also to escort Desdemona to Cyprus.
