The Republic of Gagauzia is an autonomous republic of Moldova. It borders the Republic of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Area: 1,800 km2. The capital is Komrat. Population; The population of Gagauzia is 169,300. The Gagauz account for 82,5% of the population (137,500 people).

In August 1990, Gagauzia proclaimed its autonomy, mainly in reaction to Moldova’s adoption of Moldovan as its official language. On 18 August 1991, the day of the Moscow coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbachev, Gagauzia proclaimed its independence.

The March 16-scheduled elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia (PAG) have revealed the problem of regional parties. This problem is pretty old, but the forthcoming elections for the People’s Assembly raised debates between local and international experts.

The 2006 elections for the Governor post of Gagauzia was the fourth such competition. For this competition, two rounds of elections were held. In the first round, on December 3, 2006, none of those four contestants did not gather the necessary number of votes to be elected.

It is fruitful to compare the way some events were related to me in Baku in 1990-1991 and in Gagauzia in 1994-1995. In the current paper, I shall not go into the details of the empirical material, but shall restrict myself to rough comparisons.
