Lava is the word for magma (melted rock) which comes out onto the surface of the Earth. When lava comes out of the magma chamber and cools, it hardens into rock. The term lava can describe melted rock which flows, and pieces thrown into the air by eruptions.

Volumetrically, most lava is of basaltic composition. Basaltic melts have overall lower gas contents and are more fluid than their andesitic-to-rhyolitic counterparts. Their higher fluidity (lower viscosity) is a product of their lower SiO2 (silica) contents.
