In the context of abstract algebra or universal algebra, a monomorphism is simply an injective homomorphism. In the more general setting of category theory, a monomorphism (also called a monic morphis...

One of the most annoying features of Haskell, when trying to program in a combinatorial style, is the monomorphism restriction. It means that a definition that is not syntactically a function is not allowed to be overloaded, unless an explicit type signature is provided.

Arguably, these should all be equivalent, but thanks to the monomorphism restriction, they are not. The monomorphism restriction is probably the most annoying and controversial feature of Haskell's type system. All seem to agree that it is evil, but whether or not it is considered a necessary evil depends on who you ask.

Definition: Birds can be described as monomorphic if their sex cannot be determined by their markings or the color of their feathers. The majority of parrot species are considered monomorphic. 12.3 The Monomorphism Restriction The Haskell type system contains a restriction related to type classes that is not found in ordinary Hindley-Milner type systems: the monomorphism restriction. The reason for this restriction is related to a subtle type ambiguity and is explained in full detail in the Report (§4.5.5).
