Whales are marine mammals which are neither dolphins – members, in other words, of the families delphinidae or platanistoidae – nor porpoises. They include the blue whale, the largest animal ever to have lived.

All river dolphins fall into the superfamily Platanistoidae. It appears that this superfamily separated from Delphinoidae at a very early stage, right at the time of the first odontocetes. It is possible that they evolved from some taxon within the family Agorophiidae, which is now extinct.

Whales are those cetaceans which are neither dolphins (i.e. members of the families Delphinidae or Platanistoidae) or porpoises. This can lead to some confusion as Orca (Killer Whales) and Pilot Whales have "whale" in their name, but are dolphins from the perspective of classification.
