Spirogyra owes its name to a chloroplast (the green part of the cell) that is wound into a spiral, a unique property of this genus which makes it easily to recognise. In The Netherlands up till now there are found more than 60 species of Spirogyra , in the whole world more than 400.

Spirogyra filaments are straight, uniseriate, and unbranched. The cells are longer than broad and each contain at least one and as many as sixteen spiraled, ribbon-shaped, parietal chloroplasts with numerous round pyrenoids.
