Altostratus belong to the Middle Cloud group (2000-7000m up). An altostratus cloud usually covers the whole sky and has a gray or blue-gray appearance. The sun or moon may shine through an altostratus cloud, but will appear watery or fuzzy.

Altostratus clouds are named because they are middle height clouds ("alto") and are spread out, thin, and layered ("stratus"). Sunlight is often visible through these clouds as in this picture. Altostratus clouds form when a front of warm, moist air meets a body of cold, dry air.

The sun may be visible under thinner sections of the cloud as a dim round disk, known as a "watery sun". Altostratus clouds usually form ahead of a front producing widespread and mostly continuous precipitation. Altostratus clouds do not allow enough sunlight to break through the cloud to form any shadows on the ground.

Altostratus is light, and the sun is often visible through it, although the cloud may also be thick enough to hide the sun. Rain or snow may fall. Altostratus may not cover the whole sky, but it frequently does. Clouds of other types may be visible at its edges or beneath it.

As a general rule of thumb if you can make out a texture in the cloud deck then it is likely to be low level stratus, if there is no discernible structure and appears smooth and featureless then it is likely to be mid level altostratus clouds.
